It was the fall of 1967

Over the summer Procol Harum released their hit song "A Whiter Shade of Pale". As an 11-year old aspiring rock keyboardist, I was taken with Procol Harum organist Matthew Fisher's haunting organ melody. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TQuvfTE8Ro

When September school began at St. Louis the King in Detroit, sixth-grader substitute organist (me) decided to play this piece during after-Communion meditation at the student daily mass. I absolutely nailed it and as I peered over the choir-loft railing I could see my classmates giving me the 'thumbs-up'. Fr. Kijek was not amused and came running up the stairs and said "I don't know what you were playing but cut it out!". I always think of him when I throw in a riff from Jethro Tull during prelude these days... wait... uh.

If you want to find out you'll have to join us at St Anne's for Sunday Mass
